Mature Tree Maintenance in Cleveland Metroparks

Aerating roots around the iconic willow tree at Edgewater Park.

In partnership with the CTC, the Cleveland Metroparks (CMP) have invested in maintaining their mature tree canopy in areas including Edgewater Park and Wendy Park. The trees at these locations, some of Cleveland’s most recognizable features, play an integral part in the recreational and environmental aspects that draw so many visitors each year. The Cleveland Metroparks partnership with the Cleveland Tree Coalition has improved its capacity to maintain and respond to any threats among its mature trees

As Cleveland seeks to renew its image as the “Forest City”, maintaining and preserving existing mature trees allows the city to ensure that existing trees continue to provide benefits to the city and all those who may visit. Newly planted trees take decades to fully mature and reach the stature and canopy spread of these existing trees. By pruning and cutting down diseased and dying branches, the life expectancy of these trees increases dramatically, allowing the tree to remain healthy and vigorous at its mature size. CMP also works to aerate the ground around tree roots, where soil may be compacted. Aerating near roots allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the root zone and support healthy growth. Without both proactive maintenance and planning, Cleveland is at risk for substantial loss of tree canopy.
